How long has the Maltipoo been around?

Maltipoos are great home pets. Due to their small size and cuteness, we all love them and want to keep them as pets. Their loving and loyal nature makes you and your family happy. They love to play around the house with your kids and like to get cuddled. It won’t be wrong to say that they are active dogs and will do anything to get your attention.

This breed has gained much popularity in a short span of time and its demands have increased a lot in the past few years. This is because we don’t always want a dog to guard our homes. Sometimes, we do need a cute little partner that can stay with us, especially if we live alone.

So, let’s know more about this hybrid breed, its history, journey, and how long it has been around.

What is the history of a Maltipoo?

Unlike many other dogs, the history of a Maltipoo is rather short. A Maltipoo is a cross-breed of the Poodle and Maltese. Both dogs are quite similar to each other in appearance and personality, and maybe that is what led to the idea of crossing them. The benefit of cross-breed is that we get a better offspring than the parent that has adopted all the positive aspects of both parents.

Maltese and Poodle are both purebreds and when their pairing occurs, the resulting offspring is called a ‘’designer dog’’, ‘’hybrid’’, or ‘’crossbreed’’.

When was the Maltipoo first bred?

The Maltipoo was the result of crossbreed of the Maltese and Poodle that was done intentionally. Breeders and scientists have always been curious to discover and invent new things and experiment with the existing ones. They wanted to see the results when they crossed two different purebred dogs.

As the Maltese and Poodle are much similar, the breeders intentionally crossed them in 1990 and the result of this cross was the Maltipoo. This happened in America and this hybrid was bred to be a hypoallergenic, low-maintenance, companion dog.

Are Maltipoos mutts?

Mutts are dogs of unknown origin. Maltipoos are not mutts as they were purposely bred, and we know that their parents were the Maltese and Poodle. The offspring of the Maltese and Poodle will be a true-bred Maltipoo called the first generation. Two Maltipoos can also be paired and the litter produced will be the 2nd generation dogs. However, their parents will be Maltipoos and not the Maltese and Poodle.  When these two 2nd generations are paired to mate, the resulting offspring will be called 3rd generation dogs.

What was the purpose of the creation of a Maltipoo?

There were several factors that convinced the people to cross the Maltese with the Poodle.

·         Appearance is what matters the most in any species of a pet. Appearance is always the main factor that has always created wonderful breeds. Both the Maltese and Poodle have a good appearance.

·         Both the dogs are small enough to be called lap dogs and don’t face any temperament issues. Producing more species of dogs that are small in size and can fit any household would prove much better.

·         Both dogs are smart and clean. Therefore, their crossbreed will also be smart and active. This factor also convinced people to cross the Maltese with the Poodle.

·         Aggression is what always ruins the personality of a dog and creates problems for the owners. As the Maltese and Poodle were known due to their sweet and calm nature, it convinced the breeders that the resulting offspring will be free from aggression, making it a great home pet.

Is the Maltipoo recognized as a hybrid breed?

A Maltipoo is a hybrid designer dog. However, it is not recognized by its pure breed. The dam and sire are AKC recognized but the resulting litters are not. The reason why Maltipoo is not recognized by the AKC is that it is not purebred. It is simply a cross between two different purebred species.

The demand for hybrid dogs is increasing day by day. This is because people have observed that the cross of two different breeds produced offspring with better characters. Such offspring are also less susceptible to diseases and in some cases, they do not have any genetic disease at all. This results in animals with better adaptations that have more chances of survival.

Are Maltipoos popular?

Although the Maltipoos have been around not long ago, they have gained much popularity and are ranked among the 5 best home pets in most countries. This crossbreed proved beneficial for the breeders as it had adopted all the positive characters of its parents and was thought to be better than the two individuals.

Conclusion:

Maltipoos are a hybrid breed because the Maltese and Poodle were crossed intentionally to produce a dog with desirable characters and traits. Fortunately, this cross proved beneficial and Maltipoos are now popular all over the world. The Maltipoos have an overall amazing personality. They are smart and clean dogs, great companions, loyal, friendly, and cute.
